Small businesses of the Web

Small businesses make up 99.7% of all U.S. employers. I haven’t found global stats, but it’s probably safe to say the number is also high in other countries.

This makes me think about the web. As I mentioned in a previous post, the vast majority of web companies won’t result in a Google ending. Very few start-ups will have a sensational Silicon Valley ending. However, that doesn’t mean these companies won’t be successful in their own right. And I feel that in order to make the web a better place and allow the internet ecosystem to thrive, the “big guys” should make it a top priority to help these small web businesses to be discoverable and successful. That’s why I’m excited about new efforts like the Chrome Web Store and Apps Marketplace that aim to make apps discoverable to large installed user bases.

Choice benefits everyone. Arguably it is these small start-ups that are driving the most innovation. They are the heart and soul of the web.
